In a time when it feels like we need it the most, Miley Cyrus and Adam Sandler came together to spread a message of love during “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Oct. 2.
The unlikely pair opened the late night show with a moving duet on Dido’s 2013 single, “No Freedom,” in honor of the victims of the horrific Las Vegas mass shooting, which happened the day before.
“This morning we woke up to the news of another senseless shooting – this time Las Vegas,” host Jimmy Fallon said right before welcoming his two guests to the stage. “In the face of tragedy and acts of terror, we need to remember that good still exists in this world. We’re here to entertain you tonight, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
Then, Miley, 24, leaned into the microphone and softly delivered the powerful lyrics with so much feeling and heart, while Adam, 51, strummed up a chord on his acoustic guitar. A lonesome fiddle cried in the background as the emotional duo, dressed all in black, tried their best to tell viewers, “There’s no love without freedom.”
“I think about that [message] when these tragic events happen,” Miley said of the song lyrics during her sit down interview with Jimmy. “What is music if we can’t go see our favorite artists perform because we’re scared of violence, or we’re scared of losing someone that loved to go to a concert, or we’re scared to go see a film? I think that right now we’re supposed to be a land of the free, but we can’t have freedom if we’re constantly living in fear.”
